Shifting Boundaries: Strengthening Respect and Wellbeing 

The Shifting Boundaries: Strengthening Respect and Wellbeing program is a 7-week high school-based initiative designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills to build and maintain respectful and healthy relationships. The program aligns directly with the Western Australian Curriculum – Health and Physical Education (HPE) standards, specifically under the sub-strands of interacting with Others and Staying Safe. Through engaging discussions, activities, and real-life applications, students develop essential life skills in communication, empathy, conflict resolution, and digital respect.


Program Structure & Weekly Topics:

  • Week 1: Introduction to Respectful Relationships
  • Week 2: Communication & Active Listening
  • Week 3: Empathy & Understanding Perspectives
  • Week 4: Conflict Resolution & Managing Emotions
  • Week 5: Consent, Boundaries & Personal Space
  • Week 6: Healthy vs. Unhealthy Relationships
  • Week 7: Respect in the Digital World

Curriculum Alignment:
The program is aligned with the Western Australian Curriculum – Health and Physical Education (HPE) standards, covering key areas such as:

Sub-strand: Interacting with Others

  • Characteristics of respectful relationships and their role in preventing violence and abuse.
  • Managing emotional responses and resolving conflict in family or social situations.

Sub-strand: Staying Safe

  • Strategies for communicating choices, seeking, giving, and denying consent, and expressing opinions and needs to develop respectful relationships, including sexual relationships.
  • Skills to deal with challenging or unsafe situations, including:
    • Refusal skills
    • Initiating contingency plans
    • Acting assertively

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the program, students will:

  • Understand the foundations of respectful relationships and their role in fostering a positive community.
  • Develop effective communication and active listening skills.
  • Strengthen empathy and recognise diverse perspectives in interactions.
  • Learn strategies for resolving conflict and managing emotions constructively.
  • Gain a deeper understanding of consent, boundaries, and personal space.
  • Identify signs of healthy vs. unhealthy relationships and know when to seek help.
  • Navigate digital interactions responsibly while promoting online respect and safety.
